If your WiFi is slow in one room and fine in another, the problem is your WiFi, not your internet. Upgrading to a faster plan will not fix it — you’ll pay more every month for speed that stops at the same wall it always did. The fix is usually somewhere between free and about $300, one time.

Slow WiFi is the most common call I get from houses around Reno and Sparks, and it’s the one where people have most often already spent money that didn’t help. So before you call your provider and agree to a bigger package, spend ten minutes on the test below.

Internet speed and WiFi speed are two different things

Think of it as water. Your internet plan is the size of the pipe coming to the house from the street. Your WiFi is the plumbing inside — and it’s wireless plumbing, so it gets worse with distance, walls, and interference.

Buying a bigger pipe to the street does nothing about the plumbing. If 300 megabits arrives at your house and only 45 reaches the back bedroom, upgrading to a gigabit means 1,000 megabits arrives at your house and roughly 45 still reaches the back bedroom. You’ve paid to widen the part that was never the bottleneck.

This is also why “my internet is down” and “my WiFi is down” get treated as the same sentence and aren’t. One is a problem your provider can fix. The other is a problem inside your walls, and no amount of time on hold will change it.

The ten-minute test that tells you which one you have

You need a phone or laptop and a speed test site. Any of the common ones will do.

  • Stand next to the router, within a few feet, and run the test. Write the number down.
  • Go to the room where it’s bad and run the same test. Write that number down too.
  • Compare them.

If the number next to the router is close to what you’re paying for and the number in the bad room is a fraction of it, your internet service is fine and your WiFi coverage is the problem. That is the overwhelmingly common result.

If the number is low everywhere, including standing right next to the router, then it may genuinely be the service or the router itself, and calling the provider is the right move. That’s the minority of cases, but it happens.

One caveat worth knowing: phones and laptops have their own limits, and an older device can produce a disappointing number in a house with perfectly good WiFi. If one device is slow and everything else in the same room is fast, the device is the story.

Why houses around here are unusually hard on WiFi

Some of this is universal and some of it is genuinely regional, and the regional part explains a lot of the calls I get in Spanish Springs and the North Valleys.

Stucco over wire lath. A great deal of Northern Nevada housing stock is stucco, and traditional stucco goes over a metal lath — essentially a wire mesh embedded in the wall. Metal mesh is very effective at stopping radio waves, which is a problem when your WiFi is radio waves. It’s why signal can fall off a cliff between the house and the patio, or between the main house and a detached casita twenty feet away.

The router in the structured media panel. Newer builds often put all the network equipment in a wiring panel in a closet, the garage, or under the stairs. It’s tidy and it’s terrible for coverage — you’ve placed the transmitter in the most enclosed, most metal-adjacent spot in the house, frequently at one far end of it.

Single-story sprawl. A long ranch-style layout puts more horizontal distance between the router and the far bedroom than a two-story house of the same square footage would. WiFi handles going up and down through a floor better than it handles going lengthwise through five interior walls.

5 GHz doing what it’s supposed to. Modern routers broadcast on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz (and sometimes 6). The 5 GHz band is much faster and much worse at getting through walls — that’s physics, not a defect. A device that clings to 5 GHz two rooms away will be slower than one that switched to 2.4.

The arithmetic on upgrading your plan instead

Here’s the trade people actually make, with numbers.

Say you’re on a 300 Mbps plan, the back bedroom gets 45 Mbps, and video calls there keep breaking up. The provider offers to move you to gigabit for about $30 a month more. It sounds proportionate — triple the problem, triple the pipe.

  • $30 × 12 = $360 in the first year.
  • Over three years, $1,080.
  • Speed in the back bedroom afterward: about 45 Mbps. The wall didn’t move.

Now the alternatives, cheapest first:

  • Move the router. $0. Out of the closet, off the floor, toward the middle of the house. Sometimes this alone doubles the far-room number.
  • A mesh WiFi system. Roughly $150–$300 for a two- or three-unit kit, one time. This is the fix that works in most houses.
  • A wired access point. $100–$200 in parts plus running a cable. The best result by a distance, if there’s a practical route for the wire.
  • An hour of my time at $95 on-site to work out which of the above your house actually needs, rather than buying and hoping.

So the realistic comparison is $360 every year, forever, for no change in the bad room, against somewhere between $0 and about $395 once, which fixes it. Even the most expensive version of the real fix costs less than fourteen months of the upgrade that doesn’t work.

I’d rather tell you to move a router for free than sell you an afternoon. That’s not generosity — it’s that the alternative is being the person who took $95 to confirm the problem was a closet door.

When it really is your provider — and when mesh is a waste

I’ve spent this whole post arguing one direction, so here’s the honest other side.

Call the provider if the speed is bad right next to the router. That’s the clearest signal there is. Same if it’s fine in the morning and unusable every evening — that pattern points at congestion on their side, not at your walls.

Call them if the connection drops rather than slows. Dropping and reconnecting repeatedly is a different fault from being slow, and it’s often a line, modem, or signal-level problem they can see from their end.

And upgrade the plan if you’re genuinely running out of pipe. A 100 Mbps plan in a house with four people streaming, a couple of work-from-home video calls, and a games console downloading is a real constraint, and no amount of mesh conjures bandwidth that was never delivered. Reno and Sparks have fiber in a good number of neighborhoods now, and where it’s available it’s usually a better deal than the cable tier it replaces. Just buy it because you need the capacity, not because one room is slow.

Mesh is a waste in a small apartment or a compact house where the router already reaches everywhere. It’s also a poor answer to a single dead spot right at the edge of the property — a wired access point or a directional setup will beat it, and cost less. And a mesh kit whose units are all clustered in the same third of the house accomplishes very little; they need to be spread out to do anything, which people find counterintuitive.

One more, because it comes up: those single-plug “WiFi extenders” from the supermarket are not the same thing as a mesh system. They typically halve throughput and create a second network name your phone refuses to switch to at the right moment. I’ve removed more of them than I’ve installed.

How do I know if I need a new router or a mesh system?

If speed is good near the router and poor further away, you need coverage — that is mesh or a wired access point. If speed is poor even standing next to it, the router itself may be old or failing, and replacing it comes first. The next-to-the-router speed test separates these two cases in about a minute.

Will a faster internet plan help at all?

Only if you are genuinely running out of capacity across the whole house — several people streaming, working, and downloading at once. It does nothing for a single slow room, because that room’s limit is the wireless signal reaching it, not the amount of bandwidth arriving at the house.

Is it worth using the router my provider gave me?

Often yes, at least to start. Modern provider equipment is usually adequate in a small or open home. Where it tends to fall short is coverage in a larger or awkwardly shaped house, which is a placement and coverage problem rather than a reason to replace a working device.

Can I just run an ethernet cable instead?

If you can reasonably get a cable there, do. Wired is faster, steadier, and immune to walls, and it is the right answer for a desktop, a home office, or a television that streams constantly. Mesh exists for the places a cable cannot practically reach.

Why is my WiFi fine on my phone but slow on my laptop?

Different devices have different wireless hardware, and an older laptop may only support older, slower standards. If one device underperforms in a spot where everything else is fine, the device is the limit and no change to the network will fix it.
